clean graffiti

A new type of graffiti has emerged using pressure cleaners to remove dirt from walls and pavements as a way of advertising.  Elle, Puma and Smartcar have all jumped on the bandwagon and used this new technique of 'green advertising' which is not illegal.  Its a good way of leaving a lasting impression, if nobody cleans the whole surface then the advert stays...how clever.

A new take on the highlighter pen by Marcador makes it easier to read highlighted text, simple but effective.

how quaint?

These tasty little meringue rings, they are simply not made out of egg whites and sugar, but industrial grade silicone, the kind of stuff that's in your bathroom…

Designed by German designer Tanja Hartmann to look just like a little meringue. Luckily they are made out of silicone and not sugar and egg whites, because that makes them a lot more durable but not quite as tasty!

In any case, the ring comes in 3 sizes, which is handy (sorry about the puns!) because the silicone is stretchy.

Sizes:

S = 52-57 EU / 6-8 US
M = 58-64 EU / 8-11 US
L = 65-70 EU / 11-18 US

digital lomography

Photography has always intrigued me however I find myself losing interest quickly as a result of over thinking how I am taking my photos- whether the composition and lighting is technically correct etc.  Lomography has become the focus for me where the simplicity and the uncertainty of the image adds to the excitement of developing the film.  The only rule when it comes to Lomography is that there is no rules, where you can take a photo without thinking about it.  This clearly appeals to me.

The Digital Harinezumi is what I have been waiting for.  This clever little camera is not the most sleek and feature riddled but fulfills its purpose of taking digital lomographic images perfectly.  So now you can take amazing images and upload them directly on to your computer for everyone to see.

more airmiles for bananas than me?

Most of us would like to be well traveled, but surely somethings wrong if the food we buy has travelled a longer distance than most of us would do in a lifetime?  James Reynolds is a London based designer who clearly thinks so... he demonstrates this through a smart visual representation that everyone can relate to.

conductive paint experiment

Over the holidays i have become fascinated with different ways to conduct electricity, more  importantly creative ways of making circuits.  Having explored the way in which circuits can be sewn onto fabric, I continued to research other methods when i came across conductive paint.  I had known about this concept for a while now but was amazed at the level of creativeness that could be achieved.  Calvin Harris (who I'm not a fan of) was approached by what he calls 'boffins' aka designers from London who introduced him to the concept of creating music with such conductive (or as Calvin says 'connective' he really has no clue) paint.  The videos below show the way in which the project was made and are really good.  Shame the same thing can't be said for Mr Harris' music......

try it...it gets addictive

Outlining shadows. Who would have thought? Clearly street artist ELLIS.G thought it was worthwhile doing after he got mugged, seeing the shadow of his attackers weapon.  Being an artist already he became fixated on shadows and sources of light in his work.  His work can be seen all around New York city where chalk outlines are everywhere.

im not sleeping, just resting ones eyes.

This is the perfect napping chair, I adore its simplicity.

British designer Charlotte Kingsnorth has created the ‘Felt Up’ chair:

"Cut and folded in two places, a flat piece of felt has created a new space. When sat upon it cocoons the occupier, lulling them into a state of relaxation. The felt is 16mm thick and made from 100% natural wool. It acts as a natural insulator from noise, which helps further to create a chilled space in which to sit."

projection perfection

I love these Adverts from Puma, simple but effective; the background image and clothing is projected on to the models and the room, genius!

random thought

A new social experiment...
The classic scenario of being told not to do something when you are younger yet doing it anyways seems like something you grow out of, but do you? The challenge and the thrill of knowing that you could get caught or not knowing the result of your actions will always be fascinating no matter what age you are.  "The BIG Red Button" idea has been done before but I myself wanted to conduct my own little experiment in the hope to find out some interesting results from human behavior and instincts.  You can probably guess what the experiment will involve (the title is a bit of a giveaway!) but I wanted to take it that step further by placing warnings and instructions next to the button to see how individuals would react.  Who knows what the results will show but it seems like a fun little project to conduct.
 Until i have done the experiment i will leave you with an amusing little video, if only this happened in real life...!

nostalgic moment

I was talking about old school board games and sweets the other day and I came across this funny little video that got me feeling all nostalgic....

thats just showing off...typography

I have been looking into typography recently to try and improve my presentation boards in preparation for 4th year.  I came across a few really clever ideas...

The doormat is certainly a novelty but you cant deny the clever typography used in the design

These wedding invitations are amazing, just by simply removing the dot above the 'i' in Claire, it also spells out Dave. Genius.

 This is a poster designed for the olympics in London 2012.  From a distance the word 'pride' is clear but upon closer inspection you can see all the participating countries in multi coloured circles.

contain your excitement

A new use for shipping containers? These normally boring structures have been redesigned and turned into portable cafes and custom built houses to name a few, but the possibilities are endless...

Check out theses drawings, they are amazing with a distinct drawing style, I'm off to go and draw a bit to see what I can come up with...

I came across this handy little search engine Spezify. Its not as good as Google but it gives a better visual display of information and links

Monday 29 June 2009

Ok let me give you a bit of a visual here - you have a certain look planned for a night out, from how you are going to have your hair, down to what shoes you want to wear, and then you look out to see the rain.  There is no worse feeling knowing that if you wear your beautiful brand new shoes they will inevitably be ruined by the monsoon outside (or drizzle for that matter).
Swims are a company based in in Norway who have taken the basic principle of galoshes  and flipped it on its head to create a fashion statement, with its primary purpose left uncompromised.

You can arrive in style with these fun additions to your shoes and either take them off or keep them on depending if they match your outfit of course.  Swims have a whole range of sizes and colours for men and women, taking into consideration the type of shoe.  Oh and if you are prone to falls, the rubber sole with a map of London, New York or Tokyo grips should keep you on your feet and looking fabulous.

So since I have started my internship at NCR, I have met a whole new group of people. Anybody who knows me knows I am the worst person at remembering information about people I am even worse at matching a name to a face.  Designer Hideaki Matsui has come up with a concept, taking the basic principle of a greeting handshake and has made it in to a quirky yet practical design.

The idea is that every person would have their personal details saved on their ring, so when a handshake is made, their information can be transferred and saved.  The easy method of transferring information is followed through in the interaction of going through their details. Using the ring as a scroll mechanism to look through the different details, the user can gain enough information about a contact they have made to then contact them again.

Their picture is also displayed, so if like me your memory isn't quite up to scratch, you are able to avoid the awkward moment of speaking to someone a week after you met them and still not know their name, which trust me is awkward...

Sunday 28 June 2009

When I was on the bus into Dundee a couple of days ago the new 'Welcome to Dundee' caught my eye. It seems to be part of the plan to rebrand Dundee and its image to entice more people to the city to see what it has to offer.

As you see below the old sign was, terrible. The dated font and design of the logo would be enough for many to see then turn back at the next roundabout. Dare i say it it was tacky, and did not give the best first impression.

The new and improved logo however, sends out the right message.  Its simple font, splash of colour and the new tagline represent Dundee in a different light.  The actual sign as you arrive has a black background with white text, making it eye catching and more edgy.  With Dundee University putting itself on the map one of the best universities alongside Edinburgh and Glasgow, the message is clear that the old misconceptions of Dundee are changing.

Welcome to the blog of random ideas, quirky designs and general design stuff.

A bit about who I am and what I do

Hannah Jassim, a 4th year Product Design Student studying at Duncan of Jordanstone in Dundee
Primarily I do the obvious designing products, but on occasion design a service for industry. Previous projects include designing for Microsoft, NCR and Fortnum & Mason, where a brief is set with a resolved prototype as the final outcome.
